Zhang Xiaoran, a graduate from the School of Interpreting and Translation at Beijing International Studies University (BISU), has consistently lived by the motto: be a thoughtful translator and a global explorer. Her journey as a student in the Chinese-English-French translation program reflects her dedication to using language as a bridge to the world.

During her sophomore year, Zhang took on the formidable task of translating Albert Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus.

Despite the challenges posed by the philosophical nuances and literary metaphors, she developed a methodical approach: drafting new translations in the morning and revising them from a reader's perspective in the afternoon and evening.

Her goal was to make the text accessible to a broader audience by simplifying complex expressions and adding annotations for philosophical references, ensuring readers could engage with the material without needing additional resources. After 60 days of intense work, her translation was published in August 2025.

In May 2026, Zhang participated in the China-Serbia Youth International Cultural Exchange Camp for the second time. She was selected as the English host for an investment signing ceremony attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

With only four days to prepare, Zhang meticulously rehearsed every detail of the event. When an unexpected change occurred during the event, she quickly adapted, coordinating with staff to ensure the event proceeded smoothly. Her calm demeanor and quick thinking were honed through her participation in high-level forums and events during her university years.

Throughout her four years at university, Zhang remained committed to her studies and language training. Her dedication paid off when she received a recommendation for further studies, based on her top academic performance. In September 2025, she received an offer for a master's program at Beijing Foreign Studies University's Graduate School of Translation & Interpretation.

Reflecting on her university experience, Zhang describes it as fulfilling, coherent, and growth-oriented. From her first day at university, she has been guided by the belief that language can connect people across the globe. As she continues her academic and professional journey, she remains confident that her dedication will lead her to new horizons, fulfilling her dream of becoming a thoughtful translator and a global explorer.
