University of Pennsylvania scholar delivers lecture at BISU

Professor Tian Ye from the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania visited Beijing International Studies University (BISU) for an academic exchange and delivered a lecture on May 13.

The lecture, themed "From Greek/Latin to Chinese: A Brief History of Two Centuries of Foreign Language Teaching in the US" and "From Machine Translation, Speech Recognition, and Generation to Optical Character Recognition and Large Language Models: Challenges and Insights of AI for Chinese Teaching," provided a comprehensive overview of the development of Chinese education in the US.

Tian also explored the transformative impact and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in language teaching, engaging in interactive discussions with attendees in a vibrant academic atmosphere.

After the lecture, Zheng Chengjun, BISU's vice-president, expressed gratitude to Tian for facilitating the recent visit of a delegation from the University of Pennsylvania to BISU.

Zheng emphasized that cultural exchanges between China and the US are crucial for bilateral relations, and BISU places great importance on educational cooperation with American universities.

He highlighted the hope that this visit could further enhance the mutual learning among Chinese and American youth.

Tian praised BISU's achievements in cultivating talents in international Chinese education.

He noted that the delegation's visit to China was enriching and well-structured, reflecting the successful outcomes of prior collaborations between the two institutions. He expressed his anticipation for continued and expanded cooperation between the two universities, enriching the content and depth of Sino-American educational and cultural exchanges.
