Exploring historical textures, understanding Chinese civilization
Updated: June 22, 2025

Beijing International Studies University (BISU) recently organized a cultural visit to Datong, Shanxi province, for 38 foreign teachers from 30 countries. This initiative, titled "Exploring Historical Threads, Deepening Civilizational Understanding", aimed to provide a comprehensive platform for understanding Chinese civilization through cultural landmarks like the ancient city wall of Datong, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, and the Yungang Grottoes.

The ancient city wall of Datong, centered around the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)'s military defense system, showcases the wisdom of ancient Chinese urban planning. A US teacher said, "Each brick is a historical footnote, narrating the survival wisdom and aesthetic pursuits of ancient Chinese cities."

The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda represents the pinnacle of wooden architecture. Mimoza, an Albanian teacher noted, "The flexibility of wood is transformed into strength, a crystallization of the wisdom of the Chinese dialogue with nature."

The Yungang Grottoes, with their 59,000 statues, are a visual epic of cultural fusion during the Northern Wei Dynasty(386-534). Serbian teacher Jovana stated, "The evolution from 'exotic styles' to 'local expressions' outlines the trajectory of inclusiveness in Chinese civilization."

This visit is a key component of the university's "Magnolia Shared Home Construction". Through "field experience + academic interpretation", it provided foreign teachers with a multi-faceted window to observe and understand China.

The BISU Office of International Exchange and Cooperation will continue to enrich the "Magnolia Shared Home Construction" action plan through diverse cultural experiences, enhancing foreign teachers' recognition of China's development concepts and pathways.
