On Jan 13, BISU held a seminar on integrating languages and AI disciplines.
Wang Haifeng, chief technology officer of Baidu Inc, a technological giant in China, was invited to provide his expertise on the development of BISU's foreign language disciplines.
Cheng Wei, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC BISU Committee and vice-president of the university, presided over the meeting, addressing the university's academic progress comprehensively. Ji Jinbiao, deputy secretary of the CPC BISU Committee and president of the university, made the concluding remarks.
The seminar centered on the integration of languages and AI disciplines, and the application of AI in language education.
A seminar on integrating languages and AI disciplines is held at Beijing International Studies University on Jan 13, 2025.
Wang emphasized that the application of AI is becoming increasingly wider and its impact on various industries is growing deeper.
He said that as "creators", mankind must quickly adapt to and learn to coexist with AI and discover effective collaboration methods, stressing the importance of making full use of the growing number of large AI models to stimulate human creativity and professionalism, as well as their importance in assisting in production and daily life.
Language, he noted, is not just a tool for communication but also a carrier of a nation's history, culture, laws, regulations, and values. Therefore, even in the era of rapid AI development, foreign language disciplines still play an irreplaceable role in talent development and scientific research. Instead of replacing or diminishing the importance of language disciplines, AI offers more possibilities and opportunities for their development.
Wang Haifeng expounds on the relations between AI and language disciplines.
In his closing remarks, Ji expressed gratitude to Wang for his expertise. He noted that the purpose of the seminar was to explore the direction, goals, and strategies for the integration of languages and AI, and to seek new paths for cross-disciplinary development.
He expressed hope that both the university and enterprises could further collaborate on corpus construction and AI applications, foreign language talent development, faculty training, and the popularization of AI.
Ji Jinbiao stresses the significance of the seminar.
Before the seminar, Cheng and Wang visited the "60 Years of Translation Excellence" exhibition, which showcases the achievements of the university's translation discipline.
During the seminar, Wu Jianshe, director of BISU's Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Linguistic Cognition, reported on the status of the university's language disciplines.
