The 11th Chinese-Japanese Translation Forum (CJTF)and the 2nd Chinese-Arabic Translation Forum(CATF) were recently held at Beijing International Studies University (BISU).

The forums, hosted by the Translators Association of China (TAC) and organized by BISU and the Academy of Translation and Interpretation of the China International Communications Group (CICG), attracted more than 60 translation veterans and experts who have long been engaged in Chinese-Japanese and Chinese-Arabic translation from the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xinhua News, Peking University and other institutions.  

Guo Xiaoyong, the former executive vice-president of the CICG, said in his speech that the TAC's consultation mechanism for translating from Chinese to foreign languages serves as an important method to promote the translation and dissemination of China's political discourse and important terms in a more accurate, standardized and effective manner, and the two forums play a significant role in promoting the exchange of Sino-Japanese and Sino-Arab civilizations. 

He also expressed his gratitude to BISU for its contribution to the TAC's translation of important terminologies.

In his speech, Ji Jinbiao, deputy secretary of the CPC BISU Committee and president of the university, said that BISU is a multi-disciplinary university with foreign languages as its main subjects and tourism as its specialty. Ji underscored the university's role as an important base training professionals and research in foreign languages, translation and other fields in China, as well as its commitment to serving the cause of Sino-foreign cultural exchanges.

He said that BISU's Japanese and Arabic majors are traditionally advantageous disciplines of the university, which are highly recognized by the academic community, and its teachers have participated in the translation of CPC and government documents.

Ji praised the TAC's consultation procedures for translating from Chinese to foreign languages as a positive response to the historical mission of the translation industry, and he also promised that BISU will rely on this mechanism to deepen cooperation with various institutions and jointly promote the sustainable development of Sino-foreign cultural exchanges.

During the forum, the TAC appointed several new officials from BISU and other institutions, in order to optimize the consultation mechanism for translating from Chinese to foreign languages and promote regular discussions and the release of results. 

Yang Ling, dean of BISU's School of Japanese Language, Literature and Culture of BISU, was appointed as the secretary-general of the CJTF, and Wei Wei, deputy translation reviewer of the Japanese Translation Department of Foreign Languages Press, was appointed as deputy secretary-general of the CJTF. 

Hou Yuxiang, dean of BISU's graduate school and secretary-general of the Beijing Translators Association, was appointed as secretary-general of the CATF, and Li Ying, deputy secretary-general of the Arabic Communication Department of the CICG Europe-Africa (China Today), was appointed as the deputy secretary-general of the CATF.   

The discussion session of the 11th CJTF was hosted by Yang. The session focused on the translation to Japanese of more than 100 important terms and expressions in politics, economy, society, culture, science and technology.

The discussion session of the 2nd CATF was hosted by Wang Youyong, dean of the Institute of Translation Studies of Shanghai International Studies University, and Wei Qirong, deputy dean of BISU's School of Middle Eastern Studies. The results of the discussion will be released soon.
