Ji Jinbiao: Foreign language studies have a bright future

Ji Jinbiao, deputy secretary of the CPC BISU Committee and president of the university, graced the presidents' forum of the Global Alliance of Foreign Studies Universities in Shanghai on September 14. 

Participants at this prestigious event, attended by representatives from 29 universities across 13 countries, explored the challenges faced by foreign studies universities in the AI era.

In his address, Ji proposed to bridge cultures through languages. He also shed light on BISU's innovative approaches to foreign language education. 

Central to his address was the acknowledgment of the evolving demands placed on foreign language education in today's world. As the world grapples with an array of shared challenges, there is an unprecedented need for unity and communication that transcends mere linguistic exchanges.

"Language education today is no longer confined to the acquisition of language skills; it is an expedition into human civilization and developmental wisdom," said Ji.

Ji said he believes that foreign language studies have a bright future. He encouraged language education to focus on producing individuals who can work globally, connect regional studies with global governance, and act as pioneers in promoting dialogue among civilizations.

Established in 2017, the Global Alliance of Foreign Studies Universities has 37 institutions of higher education with an edge in foreign language teaching and research. The alliance council meeting and the presidents' forum are held once every two years.
