The International Congress on Basic Science (ICBS) took place in Beijing from July 16 to 28, with the theme "Advancing Science for Humanity". The congress centered on academic discussions and exchanges in three foundational scientific fields: mathematics, theoretical physics, and theoretical computer and information science.

Presiding over the event was the chairman of the congress, Shing-tung Yau, the first Chinese-born mathematician to win the Fields Medal - the highest international award for mathematical studies. The conference saw participation from a distinguished global scientific community, including eight Fields Medal winners, four Turing Award recipients, one Nobel Prize laureate, and over 50 academicians from various countries.

To facilitate and support the myriad tasks associated with the congress, Beijing International Studies University (BISU) selected 99 exemplary volunteers to form a service team. They successfully carried out a plethora of tasks, including VIP reception, airport pickups, catering management, accommodation services, and tea break services.

In his letter to BISU, Yau expressed his gratitude. He commended the volunteers for their outstanding professionalism and enthusiastic service, which played a pivotal role in the congress's smooth operation. Yau expressed hope for more future collaborations to  promote the flourishing development of science.

The BISU volunteers showcased their linguistic expertise, providing excellent translation services for the distinguished guests, including for the Fields, Turing, and Nobel Prize laureates. Their linguistic prowess and commitment played an instrumental role in fostering a comfortable and harmonious environment, earning high praise from both organizers and guests.

During the congress, various volunteer groups carried out specialized tasks, ensuring that every aspect of the event, from reception to catering, ran seamlessly. This dedication underscored the immense value volunteer services bring to international scientific exchanges.

The 99 volunteers from BISU remained unwavering in their dedication, starting their duties at dawn and concluding at sunset, ensuring every detail was taken care of. They not only showcased the excellence of the university but also embodied the spirit of Chinese youth, serving as bridges of intercultural exchange and leaving an indelible mark on the global stage.
